As one of the most celebrated metal acts of in the history of the genre, the five piece New York band Anthrax can generate quite a big buzz with even the slightest hint of a new release. Perhaps as an effort to test these powers, guitarist and only remaining original member Scott Ian tweeted on September 14th that bassist Frank Bello, drummer Charlie Benante, and Ian would be beginning the process of writing for the new album.

Anthrax’s previous release, Worship Music, hit shelves almost exactly two years ago. That album represented the first Anthrax release of original tracks in 8 years and debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 charts. The band hasn’t released an album reaching that level of popularity since their 1993 release, Sound of White Noise.

The new album, which is currently unnamed, will be Anthrax’s first official release with new lead guitarist Joe Donais, formerly of Shadows Fall. Donais replaced Rob Caggiano, though the former guitarist left on quite friendly terms. Caggiano is now a member of Danish metal act Volbeat.

Much to the pleasure of rabid fans, Scott Ian released a panoramic photograph of the group practicing in the confines of his home, which is featured above. We’ll be sure to let you know when more details about Anthrax and the upcoming album surface.
