Metallica vs Mogwai: Lars Ulrich Fires Back

Posted 07 Jun 2014 in General News

A few days back we reported on some drama surrounding Metallica’ performance at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.  There were two stories being reported.  One was that fans are protesting to have Glastonbury remove Metallica from their headlining slot due to the appearance of James Hetfield in a History Channel show about hunting bears.  The other issue stems from comments coming from the camp of the band Mogwai.  Lars Ulrich was asked about this and shared his thoughts on the matter.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich responds to comments from Mogwai.

As a quick recap Mogwai’s comments aimed at Metallica are because the two bands will be playing at the same time during the festival.  Obviously being slotted for the same time as the worlds biggest metal band has the guys in Mogwai a bit on edge.  Chances are that even though Metallica’s music isn’t necessary the norm for a Glastonbury Festival Mogwai is a little concerned that their crowd could dwindle while Metallica is on stage.  The band members had some not so nice things to say about Metallica and specifically Ulrich.  They were quoted as basically saying he’s a terrible drummer.  You may not like Metallica but Lars can certainly play the drums.

In a recent interview with Metal Hammer Lars made the following statement when asked about the escalating situation and what he thought about the comments thrown his way.

Glastonbury — it’s like the Holy Grail in England, and obviously we’re respectful to that. But if somebody sits there and talks about petitions or what some other guy says, there’s a point where it sort of becomes ridiculous.

Lars went on to continue:

We’re fairly thick-skinned and just kind of turn a blind eye to it, but obviously, if [it’s] Mick Jagger [of The Rolling Stones] has something to say, or Alex Turner [of Arctic Monkeys], or the very nice guys in Kasabian, who I love, it’s cool. But at some point, if some guy in some other band… it’s like, ‘Huh? What? Who are you?’ At some point it becomes a little bit ridiculous.

For now Metallica is still scheduled to play the festival and the protesters haven’t gained enough momentum to remove them from the headlining slot.  Hopefully Mogwai will be able to keep their anger in check and put on a good show.  We’ll keep you posted if anything new develops.
