Reintroducing The Gittler Guitar from Gittler Instruments

Posted 26 Sep 2012 in Electric Guitar, Featured, General News, News

In the guitar landscape there are so many different styles of guitars for musicians to select from.  Each different guitar has its own unique sounds, feel, tone and ambiance as well as their own look.  Today we are proud to introduce you to a guitar from Gittler Instruments that not only looks like no other guitar on the market but will also provide musicians with a uniquely true sound.

First we should give you some background.  Alan Gittler is known for his quest to dispel many misconceptions that guitarists have held since the 1930’s.  He began this quest by starting to remove many of the features he felt were unnecessary on a traditional guitar.  This led to the removal of the body and the majority of the guitar neck and even the fretboard.  Also removed from the Gittler Guitar are tone and volume controls.  What was left was a very light (3 pounds) guitar that measured 29 inches long and 3 inches wide.  This original project led to the release of a mere 60 of the highly revered minimalist guitars that were released to the market back in the 1980’s. The original Gittler Guitar was such a work of art that it was purchased by MOMA to add to their permanent collection to be shared with the world.  You can also see the original Gittler Guitar being played by Andy Summers from the Police in the Synchronicity II video.

After releasing the 60 Gittler Guitars in the 1980’s Alan Gittler decided it was a time for a change.  He followed a religious calling and then tried to revive the Gittler Guitar brand.  This didn’t work as planned and before the Gittler Guitar brand could be reintroduced to the world Alan Gittler passed away in 2003. His son Yonatan Gittler, a percussionist himself, stepped up and is now the co-owner of Gittler Instruments LLC.

The innovative, titanium Gittler Guitar.

This brings us to the present and the latest incarnation of the Gittler Guitar.  The majority of the guitars you see on the market are made from wood.  Wood provides a good medium that works well with the vibratory characteristics of the guitar strings.  The Gittler’s ask the question ‘why’.

The latest version of the Gittler Guitar (which is scheduled to be introduced at NAMM 2013) is made of high tensile strength titanium.  This is the same titanium that you will find in such products as surgical implants or airline turbines.  Pretty cool stuff.  Although the price of titanium in comparison to wood is a lot higher they chose to use this because they felt it was the only choice that would allow them to realize their vision.

This latest version of the impressive Gittler Guitar has new features compared to the original.  The guys at Gittler Instruments say it much better than I could.  Here is how they describe some of the new features of the Gittler Guitar.

A Virtual Tool Box

The Gittler guitar has a host of exciting features that were either unavailable or unrealized up until now. Imagine being able to pitch bend a string down between the frets or to play it up through 3 octaves of soaring heights. Imagine 6 individual pickups, each dedicated to it’s own string and sonically separated from the others. You would own a tool of the purest tone and the best available synth tracking on the market today if such a thing could be realized. Imagine all this and more in a guitar that is only 28″ long, weighs less than 3 lbs and is made from virtually indestructible Titanium. Take these few small examples and hide them inside of a masterwork of industrial design and, all things considered, you would be holding the new Gittler guitar in your hands. Welcome to the future…we’ve been waiting for you!

New Features:

Electronics box (Ebox)
Improved pickups
Hexaphonic output capability
String fastening improvement
Titanium construction
Active electronics and tone shaping
Powered 1/4″ cable
LED lights on fretboard
Aerospace teflon coating
Adjustable bridge
Strap anchor points

Pricing for the Gittler Guitar is still being finalized but you will see the Gittler Guitar in action at the 2013 NAMM conference.  Stay tuned as we’ll provide future updates on the visually stunning and innovative Gittler Guitar.  You can view more detailed info and images at the Gittler Instruments Website.

We’d like to thank the guys from Gittler Instruments for contacting us here at Guitar News Daily.  We look forward to more from these creative musicians in the future.
