Deryck Whibley of Sum 41: One Drink And I Could Die

Posted 19 May 2014 in Artist News, General News, News

It seems like we hear sad news like this all to often.  You know the story.  Boy dreams of living the rock n roll life.  Boy joins a rock band.  Boy makes music by channeling the experiences of hard living and even harder partying.  Hard partying catches up with a now famous rock star and things begin to go south very quickly.  You may think we are talking about Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham or any of the many famous musicians who met their end much too early….but this time we are talking about Deryck Whibley of the band Sum 41.

Fans of Sum 41 have noticed that singer/guitarist Deryck Whibley (former husband of Avril Lavigne) hasn’t been seen for quite some time.  Naturally, many fans speculated the worst based on the singer’s history of heavy drinking and partying.  Unfortunately the speculation of fans was on the mark.  Whibley recent confirmed fans fears by acknowledging that he has been admitted to a hospital and things aren’t looking too good.

After years of heavy alcohol abuse Deryck Whibley is knocking on deaths door and if immediate changes aren’t made to his current lifestyle things are not going to end well.  According to reports the musician’s liver and kidneys have ‘collapsed’ due to his over-indulgence of booze.

Whibley made a post on his official website letting fans know what is going on and the story and photos he shared is quite scary.  According to his account of the situation that landed him in the intensive care unit the singer says he was at home, passed out and was rushed to the hospital by his fiance.  That’s the last thing he remembers until he woke up one week later.

Whibley acknowledges that the entire situation has scared him straight.  Unfortunately for many music fans we’ve heard this sad story before.  As much as a person wants to ‘go straight’ it isn’t always that easy.  Addiction is a hard battle to fight.  Especially if you continue to make music and tour.  Let’s face it.  Life on the road isn’t always conducive to sobriety.  There is always alcohol and drugs around and I would imagine that if there was a lack of party supplies, fans and other people on the tour are more than willing to help a rock star out and get them whatever it is that they need.

You can read Whibley’s account of the horror that he had to deal with in the statement below which was posted on his website.  All we can say is that we hope the musician gets the help he needs and continue to make music and live a long life.

Hey everyone, it’s Deryck here. Sorry I’ve been so m.i.a. lately, but I’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital. The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing I’ve been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day. Until one night. I was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around mid night and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden I didn’t feel so good. I then collapsed to the ground unconscious. my fiancé got me rushed to the hospital where they put me into the intensive care unit. I was stuck with needles and i.v.’s all over. I was completely sedated the FIRST WEEK. When i finally woke up the next day I had no idea where I was. My mum and step dad were standing over me. I was so freaked out. my liver and kidney’s collapsed on me. needless to say it scared me straight. I finally realized I can’t drink anymore. If I have one drink the docs say I will die. I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. i didn’t, and look where that got me. (I never thought i would ever say that! haha) Anyway I have my passion and inspiration back for writing music. I already have a few song ideas for new songs. soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again. See you all sometime! there will be more posts again so say up to date friends.

The last time we heard from Sum 41 was Screaming Bloody Murder which came out back in 2011.  Hopefully this isn’t the end and we’ll hear more from the Canadian rockers.  If there is indeed new music and a potential tour ahead we can only hope that temptation will not get the best of him.
