You may remember us telling you about the recent Chad Smith vs. Will Ferrell drum battle. The epic clash took place on The Tonight Show, and was particularly epic because of the similarity of Smith and Ferrell in appearance. To highlight this, both men wore the same outfit (including a KISS T-shirt) as they took turns drumming for The Tonight Show audience.

Lars Ulrich

Is Lars Ulrich the next target for Will Ferrell and Chad Smith?

Obvious hilarity ensued until it was time for Will and Chad to get serious.  The battle ended in a performance of “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult which included Flea, Anthony Kiedis and Josh Klinghoffer joining fellow Chili Pepper Smith on the stage. All in all, it had all the makings of a viral event, and indeed the video is one of the most popular of the year so far. However, the story is not over.

Both Chad Smith and Will Ferrell have indicated this battle will move into a new chapter: one involving Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. Ulrich has been in the news recently because Metallica is scheduled to headline Glastonbury this year but the band Mogwai isn’t too happy to be sharing the bill and more specifically the time slot at the festival with Metallica.  But back to the drum off story.  Why is Lars even being targeted by Ferrell and Smith?  According to Ferrell, Ulrich is tired of constantly being mistaken for both himself and Chad Smith, and for that reason it’s time for the battle to take place once and for all. Smith added that “the gauntlet is down.” Now all that remains is to see whether or not Mr. Ulrich will take up these two gentlemen on their claim. One can only hope.
